Abba, millions of us are remembering the loss of life that hatred brought to our nation 25 years ago when 3,000 perished in just moments. We wrestle with understanding, wondering why this kind of terror happens … not just then, but from time’s dawn to the present.

I pray that You would teach us to secure ourselves in You, holding onto Your promises, resting in Your mercy and grace. May the serenity we find become a foundation from which we become advocates for the least among us, people who work to bring others together, and who wisely and winsomely invite people to be restored to a relationship with You, their Creator God.

Forgive us our petty resentments, our prejudiced beliefs, and our willingness to ignore the suffering of others. Let our love be more than words, more than a social media post, more than a mere hope. Teach us how, Spirit of God, to speak truthfully, fearlessly, to those the hatred that exists around us.

Comfort those who mourn this day.
Defeat the powers of darkness that celebrate the divisions and pain.
Keep us in Your goodness, renewing our faith in Your Providence.

Lord, let me live in this benediction throughout this day. “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:23, NIV)
